Desk to Dancefloor

When I was invited to style a Marks & Spencer suit for both the desk and the dancefloor, I didn't anticipate how hard that might be, given my all-round disposition for smart attire. In truth, what I would wear to the office and what I would wear to the office party may have very few differences, if any at all. The lines between business and pleasure are often blurred in my life, and perhaps that has come to reflect in my choice of outfits.

Nonetheless, were I to let my proverbial hair down at the end of a working day, the most proficient means to switch from work to play would be simply to change my shirt. After a long and potentially mind-numbing shift at the office, even a small alteration can breathe a fresh lease of life into an outfit and, consequently, an individual's mindset. For example, I have swapped my white shirt and orange tie for a blue shirt with contrasting buttons, which, while maintaining sharp lines and a pop of colour, appears better suited for the bar than the boardroom.

Revisiting LC:M ~ Street Style Portraits: Part I

Scanning through my archive of street style photography, I happened upon a number of portraits from London Collections, which, for one reason or another, I hadn't published to my blog. It would be a shame for those handsome faces to stay hidden, so over the final few days of 2013, I'd like to share them with you.

Unconditional

One of the many reasons I loved working for Pebble Zine was our aspiration to support independent artists. Combining my editorial position with my repute as a fashion blogger, I soon discovered a spectrum of unique designers and emerging talent, many of whom I continue to support today. Independent fashion labels may appear small compared with high street behemoths, but they add diversity to a saturated market.

One of my favourite independent retailers is 'Unconditional', which sells alternative yet elegant styles in menswear, womenswear and unisex fashion. In keeping with my taste for snazzy shirts, I fell instantly in love with a grey tartan design with a crisp white collar and cuffs. The pattern was beautiful, the cut was perfect - I had to have it.

Unconditional Unconditional

What I love the most about Unconditional over high street chains is its individual quality. The brand has a particular style that remains consistent throughout its collection, which offers a step aside from conventional fashion. A customer visiting their Seven Dials shop would find it challenging to locate a garment of similar design elsewhere.

Understandably however, these unique fashions come with a premium price tag. As a low-income graduate with plenty of Xmas shopping left to do, I would not have been able to treat myself to the beautiful tartan shirt without the kind support of Barclaycard, who are campaigning to bring independent businesses, such as Unconditional, into the limelight. I agree it is better to pay extra for greater quality, and as soon as I am earning a little more from freelancing, I can offer my wardrobe some much needed Unconditional love.

Who's that girl?

It is no secret that Maddy and I have a penchant for 'New Girl'. Since she introduced me to the quirky American sitcom, many lazy evenings have been spent on the sofa together, following the mad and dysfunctional lives of Jess and her kooky flatmates, Nick, Schmidt and Winston. As housemates ourselves, I guess we could relate to the hilarious storylines and enthralling character dynamics. (Or perhaps we just love watching Zooey Deschanel prancing around in cute dresses.) Maddy naturally found an affinity with Jess - and not just because they are telepathically connected by the same fringe.

If you were to go looking in Maddy's wardrobe, you might just have a Narnia moment and fall into Apartment 4d. Pretty dresses, polka dots and patterned jumpers are aplenty. We had often mused about having a New Girl themed photo shoot, and with Zalando having compiled their own New Girl fashion edit, we couldn't help feeling inspired to finally give it a go. I can only suspect Maddy has given up trying to shake off her repute as a real-life Jess, because she won't live it down after today!
